Most Berks COVID data down in weekly report

Berks County’s weekly COVID data continued to trend downward following a post-holiday spike.

According to the state’s weekly update of COVID data, Berks saw its cases, hospitalizations and case rate all decreases. It was the second week of improvement for the county after hitting high numbers following the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Cases

The county’s weekly case count was down for the second straight week.

According to Wednesday’s update of the state Department of Health’s COVID dashboard, Berks had 449 new cases and reinfections. That’s down 127 from the 576 reported last week.

The county’s case counts have dropped significantly the past two weeks after hitting a four-month high of 776 in data reported Jan. 4.

The county’s COVID cases per 100,000 residents were also down from data reported last week. The state’s Early Warning Monitoring Dashboard showed that between Jan. 11 and Jan. 17 the county had a case rate of 69 per 100,000 people. Last week the rate was 81 per 100,000 people.

The positivity rate of 19.6% in Berks was up slightly, coming in just over a point higher than the rate of 18.5% reported last week.

Overall, Berks has had 124,658 COVID cases during the pandemic.

Statewide, this week’s data showed 66 COVID cases per 100,000 people and a positivity rate of 12.8%. Both numbers were down from data reported the previous week.

There have been 3,458,136 COVID cases in the state during the pandemic, with 11,045 new cases and reinfections added in Wednesday’s data update.

Deaths

The state, which reports the number of Berks residents to die no matter where the deaths take place, reported this week that a total of 1,741 county residents have died of COVID. That’s an increase of eight from data reported last week.

The eights deaths were the most for the county since eight were also reported on Nov. 2.

Statewide, a total of 49,397 people have died of COVID, an increase of 134 from data reported last week.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations of COVID patients also saw a decrease for the second straight week.

According to state data released Wednesday, there were 55 hospitalized patients in the county. That’s down 14 from the previous week.

Of the hospitalized patients in this week’s data, four were in intensive care and three were on ventilators. The number of intensive care patients was the same as data reported last week, while the number on ventilators was up one from last week.

Statewide there were 1,347 COVID patients hospitalized, down 220 from the number reported last week.

Vaccinations

• The number of fully vaccinated individuals in Berks was 260,226, an increase of 170.

• The number of individuals to receive a bivalent booster dose since Sept. 2 is 52,472, an increase of 1,034.
