Learning to ride a bicycle is a seminal moment in most childhoods.
Hopping on the seat, grasping the handle bars and nervously peddling with tiny legs in a battle against gravity can be both enthralling and terrifying.
A national nonprofit group is working to make sure some local kids get to experience it all.
All Kids Bike is raising funds to bring its Kindergarten Learn-to-Ride Program to Cumru Elementary School. All Kids Bike is a part of the South Dakota-based Strider Education Foundation.
The program will provide a fleet of 24 kids bikes, pedal conversion kits, helmets and a teacher instruction bike. It also offers a certified curriculum that will provide a teacher with everything they need to know to hold a series of eight bike riding lessons.
Lisa Weyer, executive director of the Strider Education Foundation, said learning to ride a bike can be an important experience for kids in many ways.
“The ability to ride a bike develops physical and mental well-being, and instills confidence which can lead to better focus in the classroom,” she said in a statement announcing the program’s efforts at Cumru Elementary School. “Kindergarten is the perfect age to teach kids to ride a bike focusing on gross motor skills, balance and coordination. By teaching bike riding at the entry level in a public school system, we are providing the knowledge and a positive foundation of a lifelong skill.”
The equipment that All Kids Bike plans to provide to Cumru will help teach about 22 kids per year to ride a bike and has a lifespan of seven to 10 years. That means it will impact around 220 children over the next decade.
It is unclear when the bikes and other equipment will be delivered to the school or when lessons may start.
To help bring the program to Cumru, All Kids Bike is holding a donation drive with a goal of raising $6,000.
