Penn State loses assistant coach to Detroit Lions

Defensive line coach John Scott Jr. is leaving Penn State, Nittany Lions football coach James Franklin confirmed Monday night.

The Centre Daily Times first reported that Scott, who has been on the Penn State staff since 2020, would be joining the Detroit Lions staff in an unspecified role.

Whoever replaces the 47-year-old Scott will be the second new Penn State assistant coach since the 2022 season ended with a 35-21 win over Utah in the Rose Bowl. Franklin fired wide receivers coach Taylor Stubblefield in January and replaced him with Marques Hagan.

“I would like to thank John for everything he has contributed to our program over the past three years,” Franklin said in a statement. “John is a great coach and a great man. I am grateful for his friendship and the impact he has had on our student-athletes.

“This was a great opportunity for him in the NFL and I wish him and his family nothing but the best.”

Scott is leaving after Penn State’s defense had a successful season. The Lions finished second in the nation in pass defensive efficiency, sixth in sacks (43), 10th in scoring defense (18,2), 17th in total defense (323.5 yards per game) and 17th in rushing defense (111.2).

Scott replaced Sean Spencer, who left Penn State after the 2019 season to become defensive line coach with the New York Giants. Spencer spent two seasons there before joining the Florida staff.
