Reading-Berks Science and Engineering Fair is set for March

The 71st edition of the Reading-Berks Science and Engineering Fair is right around the corner.

The event will be held the week of March 13, and organizers are encouraging the public to stop by midweek to check out the hundreds of projects created by local students.

For the first time, the fair will include both daytime and evening hours for public viewing. Students’ projects will be on display at the Schumo Center at Albright College on March 15 from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The science fair dates back to 1952 and is the second oldest science fair in the country.

The event is open to Berks students in grades six through 12. About 500 students are expected to participate this year.

Students develop and present their own projects, using the principals of the scientific method. The projects are judged by experts from local community organizations.

Each year, the fair presents more than $10,000 in awards to fair winners. And the top two students from the senior division — grades nine through 12 — earn a chance to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
