Reading man named to Pennsylvania Humanities Council board of directors

A Reading resident who serves as outreach coordinator at the Reading Public Library has been named to the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.

Daniel Egusquiza is one of five new appointees to the 24-member board. The new members’ terms began Monday, and they are eligible to serve up to two consecutive three-year terms.

According to the Pennsylvania Humanities Council website, its members are engaged grantmakers, innovative program designers, dedicated partners and passionate advocates. Their programs focus on areas of need where the humanities can have the greatest impact on civic engagement and education.

In addition to his position at the library, Egusquiza is the founder of Barrio Alegria, an organization that serves the Latino community using art as a tool for multicultural engagement and development.

Egusquiza is credited with using art and dance to create a welcoming space that builds up a neighborhood of sharing and collaboration. His work focuses on uplifting underfunded or underrepresented Latino artists and investing in future leaders.

“This impressive new slate of board members adds to our diverse and talented team of professionals from across the state — people committed to the humanities and enthusiastic about our mission to create positive change in their local communities,” said Pennsylvania Humanities Council Executive Director Laurie Zierer. “This year we successfully expanded our search for new members to include people on the ground in the communities we partner with and those who have seen our work in action.”

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council is governed by the board of directors, which is made up of elected individuals and governor appointees. All seats on the board are filled, with members having backgrounds in business, law, education, philanthropy, government, arts and culture.
