Reading Rebels split weekend matchups, winning streak ends at 11 games with loss to Atlantic City

The Reading Rebels’ impressive run in The Basketball League came to an end Friday as their 11-game winning streak was snapped by a 112-98 loss to the Atlantic City Gambits on the road.

The Rebels bounced back Sunday at Alvernia’s Jack McCloskey Court with a 124-106 win against the Virginia Valley Vipers.

In Friday’s game, Reading was outscored 68-45 in the second half as both teams entered the game tied for second place in the Northeast Division. The Rebels played without injured starter Richard McCalop, who is averaging 14.8 points per game.

It was just the third time this season that Reading (13-3) was held under 100 points and it was the Rebels’ second loss to Atlantic City.

James Butler, who scored a team-high 20 points, had six points in second quarter for Reading as it took 53-44 halftime lead.

Brandon Taylor, who scored a game-high 27 points for the Gambits (13-2), scored 10 points in the third quarter, which Atlantic City with a 26-6 run and its way to 45 points and a 89-73 lead.

The Rebels came as close as 12 at 95-83 early in the fourth quarter.

Emmanuel Egbuta scored 18 points, Tarojae Brake scored 15, Aquille Carr had 12 and Myles Lewis had 11 for Reading, which shot 41.4% from the floor, 41.9% from 3-point range and 54.2% from the foul line.

In Sunday’s game, Reading led 102-100 with 5:46 left in the fourth quarter before Lewis made a layup to spark a 20-0 run to put the it away. Six players scored for the Rebels during the run, which was highlighted by two 3-pointers by Brake and a pair of dunks by Egbuta.

Lewis finished with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds, Brake had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Anthony Lee had 19 points and Carr scored 17 points. The Rebels shot 51.1% from the floor, 27.8% on 3-pointers and 66.7% from the foul line. Reading won the rebounding battle 65-39.

Reading had a 59-52 lead at the half and Lewis scored nine points in the second quarter.

Maleke Jones had a team-high 24 points for the Vipers .

The Rebels return to action Friday, May 5 to take on L’Academie Alma at 7 p.m. at Alvernia.
