Reading Salvation Army event aims to get kids ready to head back to school

A special event aimed to make sure local kids are ready to head back to school — both physically and mentally.

The Salvation Army Reading Citadel Corps Violence Prevention Program held a back-to school event Friday that included a backpack giveaway and activities designed to promote mental health.

A total of 250 backpacks — filled with school supplies like notebooks, pencil cases, folders and books — were given out, along with nearly 300 take-away lunches.

Kids also got to take part in mental health activities that included bubble breathing exercises, making your own stress ball, positive affirmation jars, mindfulness coloring and face painting.
