Reading United AC concludes season with win over Lehigh Valley United

Reading United AC wrapped up its 2022 season with a strong offensive showing on Saturday night.

Reading scored three goals in the first half before holding off a late comeback from Lehigh Valley United to secure a 3-2 win at Alvernia University.

“I thought we played really well for the first 60 minutes,” Reading coach Casey Moore said. “I was happy with the way we played.”

Reading (5-4-5) began the game with fast, aggressive play on offense, leading to three goals in the first 18 minutes. Defender Ryan Kuster opened the scoring in the seventh minute, receiving a pass from defender Omar Boudeka before firing a shot into the net from close range to make it 1-0.

“The (offensive) tempo was quick,” Moore said. “Our guys were finding really good spaces.”

Reading added to its lead with a goal from midfielder Sam Hershey in the ninth minute. Forward Talla Faye was credited with the assist.

Midfielder Isak Sedin scored Reading’s third goal in the 18th minute, finding the back of the net from the edge of the 18-yard box. Sedin’s goal was set up by accurate passing from Hershey and midfielder Colin Biros, who were credited with assists.

“We were really good in the box,” Moore said. “(We) scored some really nice goals.”

Trailing 3-0, Lehigh Valley began to chip away midway through the second half. Oliver Whitham scored on a penalty kick in the 61st minute.

Lehigh Valley (1-12-1) scored again in stoppage time, as Nigel Griffith took advantage of some poor defensive positioning from Reading before scoring on a nearly wide-open net. The final whistle blew just seconds after the goal.

“We tailed off toward the end of the game,” Moore said. “We made a few silly mistakes, and they punished us.”
