Reading United women’s team plays to draw in first game in its history

In the first game in its history, the Reading United women’s team played to a 1-1 draw against PA Classics Saturday in a WPSL Mid Atlantic Division match at Spooky Nook in Manheim.

Reading took a 1-0 lead when Wyomissing grad Becca Kotula scored off a free kick in the 28th minute after PA Classics goalie Sofia Gonzalez of Penn State Berks had handed the ball outside the penalty area.

PA Classics tied it minutes later on a goal by Wilson grad Liz Estrada.

In the second half, United goalie Emme Wolfel of Kutztown University made a nice save on a shot by Estrada to keep it tied.

“Outstanding effort by this group for the first-ever match as a WPSL team,” Reading coach Tom Gosselin said in a press release from the team. “Very happy to get a point on the road against a top club like PA Classics. This group has managed to come together very quickly to shape our inaugural program. We are all looking forward to an exciting season of top-class soccer.”

Next up for the Reading United women’s team is its first home game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Hershey FC at Alvernia University.
