from The Office of State Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz
State Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, D-Berks, announced on Tuesday, Sept. 10, that the Reading School District has received state grant funds to help address environmental concerns in their school buildings.
More than $1.9 million was awarded to the Reading School District to cover the cost of environmental remediation for the facilities.
The funding for the Public School Environmental Repairs Program, which Cepeda-Freytiz voted for in the 2023–24 state budget, is what makes the money available. Schools may utilize the grants under this program to address environmental risks in their facilities, such as asbestos and mold removal and cleanup, as well as lead paint and water source removal.
“Ensuring that our children learn in safe and healthy environments is paramount. This $1.9 million grant is a significant step forward in addressing longstanding environmental concerns in the Reading School District. By investing in the remediation of hazards like asbestos, mold, and lead, we’re not only protecting the well-being of our students and staff but also reinforcing our commitment to quality education for all,” said Cepeda-Freytiz.
A total of $75 million was available for the competitive grant program established in 2023, and 109 school districts and technical centers across the state received grants in this round. Projects require a cash match of 50% of total eligible project costs. More information is available on the Department of Education’s website.
