The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced funding to 141 communities through the Resident Opportunity and Self-Sufficiency (ROSS) Service Coordinator Program. Reading Housing Authority (RHA) was awarded $257,317 to equip residents with the tools and resources they need to achieve financial independence, attain families’ goals, and build economic mobility. This funding follows the great success RHA has had with previous ROSS funding. Since 2021, more than 200 RHA residents have participated in career counseling, job fairs, GED classes, and ESL programming while receiving casework services designed to address childcare, transportation, and individualized coaching and support. Through this valuable program, residents of RHA have earned college degrees and obtained jobs that produce an actual living wage, allowing some to move beyond life in public housing.
On Thursday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m., RHA welcomed officials from HUD as they presented this award, along with an award to the Berks Coalition to End Homelessness, which received funding to address youth homelessness. As the success of both agencies is amplified by the support of legislators throughout all levels of government, RHA was pleased to also welcome remarks on this date from state and local officials. The award presentation was followed by a tour of the Oakbrook Center for Community Services, where ROSS services will be delivered when construction concludes by the year’s end. Following the tour, local housing and community development representatives engaged in a conversation with HUD officials about the housing needs, challenges, and successes in Reading and Berks County.
