Schuylkill River Greenways to Remove Large Debris Pile from Schuylkill River at Douglassville Bridge

from Schuylkill River Greenways

Schuylkill River Greenways owns the historic Douglassville Bridge, which serves as a crucial river crossing for the Schuylkill River Trail. In recent years, powerful storms have downed trees and dropped branches into the river, causing them to pile up under the legacy footings of this bridge, which has short spans and openings.

In the past 20 years, SRG has completed two clean-ups of this area, both from on top of the bridge and causing the closure of the trail. Thanks to the involvement of several property owners, this cleanup will be happening from the northern bank of the river, making the project much more manageable. This also makes it possible to clean up after future large storms, greatly reducing the likelihood of pileups.

Who: Schuylkill River Greenways

What: The removal of a debris pile from the Schuylkill River at the Douglassville Bridge.

When: The project is underway and expected to be completed in early September. The work will be ongoing.

Where: Douglassville Bridge, accessible from the Morlatton Village Trailhead of the SRT: 480 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville.

The total cost of this project is projected to be just under $200,000, all of which comes from Schuylkill River Greenways through fundraising efforts. While the organization does receive grants for building the new trail, maintenance projects like this one are the sole responsibility of the nonprofit. To meet the increasing needs of trail maintenance, SRG is currently in a $5 million Stewardship Fund Campaign to create an endowment that would maintain the trail now and in the future.

At the end of the project, SRG will host volunteer clean-up days to remove all of the trash, litter, and plastics from the project site to discard appropriately.
