U.S. Sen. Bob Casey briefly spoke at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday to deride corporate-fueled “greedflation” and tout Vice President Kamala Harris.
Casey’s 2-minute-long address came during the lead-up to the primetime slots culminating with Harris officially accepting the party’s presidential nomination.
Although he faces a challenge from Republican Dave McCormick, Casey did not mention McCormick’s name in his brief time on stage.
Welcomed with a chant of “Bob, Bob, Bob” from the Pennsylvania delegation, Casey brought up moms complaining to him about the price of diapers, which he said increased by $15 in a six-month span.
Corporations respond to complaints by saying their costs have increased, but Casey disagreed.
“They’re selling you a lie,” he said. “Prices are up because these corporations are scheming to drive them up.”
Food prices have skyrocketed because of “food conglomerates that sit behind the supermarkets extorting families at the checkout counter,” said Casey.
“This is greedflation,” said Casey. “I’ve been fighting it a long time and so has Kamala Harris, and, finally, we are starting to win.”
Casey pointed to Congress capping insulin costs at $35 per month. He said that Harris would support additional measures like banning price gouging on food and penalties for price gouging during crises, such as when the cost of toilet paper ballooned during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Americans do not expect free stuff, said Casey, just fairness.
“The people I’m talking to from Allentown to Erie don’t tolerate being ripped off,” he said. “We’re fighting for honesty. Kamala Harris is fighting for it. Will you fight for it? All right, let’s go out and win this thing!” he said to cheers.
McCormick released a statement following Casey’s appearance in which he said that Casey’s votes over the years have driven up costs. “This November, Pennsylvania will retire Bob Casey because our commonwealth cannot afford four more years of the dangerously liberal Biden-Harris-Casey agenda,” McCormick said.
