Stay Alive Make Art: The Art of Amos Lemon Burkhart

From Kutztown University

The Marlin and Regina Miller Gallery at Kutztown University, in conjunction with KU’s Department of Art and Design, presents “Stay Alive Make Art: The Art of Amos Lemon Burkhart,” from Thursday, Oct. 16, to Sunday, Dec. 14, in the Sharadin Arts Building. This exhibition features the restless exploration of techniques, ideas, and methods of young prodigy Amos Lemon Burkhart, who worked to understand and express his own turbulent interior life.

The exhibition displays complexities of emotional instability, anxiety, and trauma; questions about love, sex, and gender identity; and issues around substance use and abuse revealed through complex, layered paintings and drawings.

Amos tragically died in 2018 at age 20 in a drug and alcohol-related drowning. This exhibition serves as more than a display of his art; it features interactive stations that encourage conversations about creativity, mental illness, and addiction to inspire artists to “Stay Alive and Make Art.”

The exhibition opens with a public reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, followed by the Creative Royale, with music, on-the-spot poetry, and art making.
