Villanova’s Tyler Will returns home after scary injury

STATE COLLEGE >> Villanova tight end Tyler Will sustained a concussion and returned home with his parents following the Wildcats’ 38-17 loss to Penn State Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

The 6-1, 255-pound Will, a graduate student from Episcopal Academy, was injured when he tackled Devyn Ford on the second-half kickoff.

He didn’t move for several minutes as the crowd of 105,790 watched in silence before he was carted off the field. He was briefly hospitalized for observation. A Villanova spokesman later said that Will had full movement of his arms and legs and that he would return home to Newtown Square with his parents.

Will had three catches for 21 yards in Villanova’s first three games.

“He’s doing OK, from everything we’ve heard,” Wildcats coach Mark Ferrante said. “We actually hear he might be coming back and joining the team to go home with us so that’ll be huge if that’s true.”

Cain’s status >> Penn State running back Noah Cain was limited to one carry for 2 yards because he “was dinged up” last week against Auburn, coach James Franklin said.

Keyvone Lee started for Cain, and John Lovett also saw extensive action.

“Noah didn’t practice as much this week as we wanted him to,” Franklin said, “so we planned to go to a 1-to-1-to-1 rotation with those three guys. We had been going 2-to-1, but it was a combination of the rotation and him not practicing much this week.”

Lovett finished with 46 yards on 11 carries, and Lee had 21 yards on seven attempts.

Not noisy >> Villanova used leaf blowers during practice leading up to Saturday’s game to simulate the crowd noise the Wildcats expected at Beaver Stadium.

The crowd, however, wasn’t nearly as raucous as the sellout crowd that attended last weekend’s White Out game against Auburn. The noise was sustained from the beginning of the game to the end.

Not so Saturday. Villanova quarterback Daniel Smith was asked whether the crowd noise affected the Wildcats.

“The leaf blowers were louder,” Smith said.

Big day for receivers >> Penn State wide receivers Jahan Dotson, Parker Washington and KeAndre Lambert-Smith combined for 17 catches for 353 yards and four touchdowns.

Dotson had seven receptions for 117 yards and one TD; Washington had five for 148 and two scores; and Lambert-Smith had five for 88 and one TD.

They also combined to gain 204 yards after their catches.

“All three of them are big-time playmakers,” quarterback Sean Clifford said. “They’re guys who can make plays when you get it to them in space. It gives me more and more confidence to push the ball down the field and let them eat.

“They tell me all the time that they’re open. They all want the ball, which I love. It’s awesome.”

Brown criticizes reserves >> Penn State safety Ji’Ayir Brown was not happy that the reserves on defense allowed Villanova to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“It was highly disappointing,” Brown said. “We pride ourselves on living by the standard. When we see a group of guys not living by the standard, it’s a shock to us.

“If you’re not living by the standard, you’re disrespecting the team, not just yourself. We’re definitely taking that into consideration and looking to improve our units.”

Iowa game is set >> Penn State’s Oct. 9 game at Iowa will have a 4 p.m. kickoff and will be televised by FOX, it was announced Saturday.

The Nittany Lions were ranked sixth in the latest Associated Press Top 25, and the Hawkeyes were fifth.
