Wilson grad Zakiyah Winfield helps Glenville State win national championship in NCAA Division II women’s basketball

Wilson grad Zakiyah Winfield scored 23 points to help Glenville State to the NCAA Division II women’s basketball national title with an 85-72 victory over Western Washington Friday night at Bill Haas Arena in Birmingham, Ala.

The national championship is the first for the Pioneers (35-1), who were making their first appearance in the final.

Winfield, a junior guard, was 9-for-19 from the field, including 1-for-2 on 3-pointers, and 4-for-7 from the line in 22 minutes. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Third-seeded Glenville State trailed 46-44 at the half, but outscored fifth-seeded Western Washington 41-26 in the second half.

Re’Shawna Stone had a team-high 25 points for the Pioneers.

The Vikings (25-6) turned it over 25 times against the Glenville State’s pressure.

The Pioneers won their six NCAA Tournament games by an average of 25.6 points.

Winfield averaged 19.5 points and 7.3 rebounds in the tournament.

Glenville State entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, but dropped to No. 3 when the field was reseeded for the Elite Eight.
