A slow start did not prevent Kutztown from a big win on Saturday.
The Golden Bears trailed 7-0 in the first quarter before scoring 34 unanswered points to defeat Bloomsburg 34-7 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East game at Bloomsburg.
The Golden Bears registered 371 yards of total offense, most of which came through the air. Quarterback Eric Nickel completed 18-of-30 passes for 327 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Wide receiver Mason McElroy, a Wilson graduate, had five catches for 128 yards. Fellow receiver and Boyertown alumnus Jerome Kapp had five receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Three of Kutztown’s touchdowns came on the ground, as running backs Jordan Davis and Darryl Davis-McNeil both found their way into the end zone. Nickel also ran for a touchdown.
In another strong performance, the Golden Bears’ defense gave up 244 yards of total offense, but allowed the Huskies (0-3, 1-5) to reach the red zone only one time. Bloomsburg was 4-of-15 on third down conversions and 0-for-2 when going for it on fourth down.
Kutztown linebacker and Upper Perkiomen graduate Tyler Whary recorded seven tackles and forced a fumble. The Golden Bears forced two turnovers.
