Kutztown University began its season with a loss on Saturday.

The Golden Bears fell 31-20 to No. 23 Assumption in Worcester, Massachusetts, marking the second straight year in which Kutztown lost its season opener to the Greyhounds.

The Golden Bears (0-1) recorded 362 yards of total offense to Assumption’s 285 yards, but the Greyhounds ran for 102 yards, were 2-for-2 on fourth down conversions and forced two turnovers.

Kutztown quarterback Donny Blaine had a big day through the air, as the graduate student was 17-for-31 passing for 282 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Wide receiver Kurtis Ravenel Jr. was Blaine’s top target, as the graduate student had seven catches for a career-high 217 yards and a career-high two touchdowns.

After the two teams traded pairs of touchdowns in the first half, Assumption took a 21-14 lead as quarterback Jake Cady found Kyle Sonnie for a 20-yard touchdown with 26 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The ensuing extra point was good.

After the Greyhounds (1-0) extended their lead to 24-14 with a field goal midway through the third quarter, Blaine found Ravenel Jr. for a 74-yard touchdown to make it 24-20 with less than two minutes remaining in the third. The ensuing extra point from Dawson Evitts was no good.

That is all the closer the Golden Bears would get, as Assumption added a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Cady, responsible for throwing the last touchdown, finished 21-of-31 passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.
