Provost Lorin Basden Arnold Elevated to Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

From Kutztown University

Dr. Lorin Basden Arnold, provost at Kutztown University, has been promoted to senior vice president for Academic Affairs, university president Dr. Philip Cavalier announced on Monday, July 28. Basden Arnold has served as chief academic officer and second-in-command for the institution since June 2021, with her new title taking effect on Friday, Aug. 1.

Basden Arnold serves as the main advocate for student success and the pursuit of academic excellence at Kutztown University. This includes oversight of educational, scholarly, service, and research initiatives throughout the division of Academic Affairs. She oversees numerous administrative, curricular, and co-curricular units, including the Office of Assessment, the Rohrbach Library, the Honors Program, the Center for Student Success and Academic Excellence, the Career Development Center, the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching, Institutional Technology, and the Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects.

“Lorin has done an excellent job over the past four years leading the largest division at Kutztown University,” Cavalier said. “She brings tremendous experience and knowledge to the university leadership team, and I am grateful to have her to help guide KU’s strategic planning, mission, and vision.”

In the last four years, Basden Arnold has led the university’s vision of its academic offerings, including the addition of new concentrations and certificates as well as new non-credit learning opportunities. In addition, she plays a pivotal role in the university’s Middle States review process.

In 2023, Basden Arnold helped the university acquire a multi-million-dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase undergraduate retention and graduation rates and eliminate equity gaps for KU students. Under her guidance, the university launched a new student support platform (Starfish), began assigning a student success navigator for each incoming student, engaged in the transition to a new student information system (Banner), and broadened non-credit learning opportunities through KU Advance.

“I truly believe in the mission of Kutztown University and believe the dedication I see to students across the KU community is exceptional,” Basden Arnold said. “I am happy to continue to collaborate with impressive colleagues on the cabinet and across the campus to serve the region with quality educational opportunities.”

Basden Arnold came to KU in June 2021 from SUNY New Paltz, New Paltz, NY, where she served three years as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; and five years as professor of Communication. She provided leadership and direction for six academic divisions, serving nearly 7,000 undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students with more than 150 programs. She led the administration for multiple administrative, curricular, and co-curricular units, including Strategic Planning and Assessment, the Scholar’s Mentorship Program, the Sojourner Truth Library, the Center for International Programs, the Honors Program, the Center for Student Success, the Office of Academic Advising, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, and the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Before SUNY New Paltz, Basden Arnold spent seven years as dean of the College of Communication and Creative Arts at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ. She provided leadership for six academic departments and nearly 250 faculty and staff, serving more than 1,700 students enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs at an institution of 16,000 students. She oversaw an $11 million budget and established the Rowan Writing Center.

She has nearly 30 publications, including two recent chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Metaphor in Organization Studies and Maternal Regret. She has presented at numerous conferences, served on multiple committees, and has extensive professional community service.

A three-time graduate of Purdue University, Basden Arnold earned her doctorate in interpersonal communication in 1996, her master’s degree in public affairs/issue management in 1991, and her bachelor’s degree in communication/public relations in 1988.

She began working at Rowan in 1998 and formerly taught at Purdue University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
