The Public Art Studio, Total Experience Learning

by Albright College

Total Experience Learning at Albright College thanks everyone who participated in painting this vibrant mural. Last week, Mike Miller and a handful of volunteers began the installation of the painted polyester interfacing on the west facade at DeCarlo’s, 240 Penn St., Reading.

The mural, designed by artist Treasure Lopes ’22, a Reading-Muhlenberg Vocational Technical School and Reading High School graduate, was inspired by the work of American artist Ernie Barnes. Visual inspiration for the featured couple was drawn from a photo of a pair of regulars at DeCarlo’s. As Treasure designed, she found herself incorporating features of her own grandparents. The transformation is a testament to the connective and personal nature of public art.

DeCarlo’s mural was painted in the studio and on location around the community, including inside DeCarlo’s with community members and Silver Sneakers, from September 2023 to May of this year. More than 1,000 community members participated in the painting of this mural. Community members that participated included TExpL’s Reading and Antietam 6th graders, Albright College art students, Albright College alumni, and art students from the Reading/Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center.
