Fulfilling a dog's bucket list: Rescue dog diagnosed with terminal cancer eats out at 1787 Brewing Co.

Steve MacBeth of 1787 Brewing Company served an unusual dinner guest during the pub’s Friends and Family Night on May 11.

Safyre, a rescue dog diagnosed with terminal cancer, was served a doggie plate of chicken. Eating out at a restaurant is part of her bucket list.

Foster Mom Carrie Castner, from Easton, of Outcast Rescue based in Lehigh Valley, explained that the 2-year-old mixed breed dog was rescued from an actively high-kill shelter in Philadelphia.

Fleetwood Junior Troop earns Business Owner Badge

Fleetwood Junior Troop 1956 visited Dianna, owner of Rita’s Blandon and Sinking Spring locations. The troop was working on earning their Business Owner badge. The Girl Scouts received a tour of the shop, learned how their ice is made and were given a nice cool treat while they talked business. Dianna explained to the girls that she had to have a business plan ready before she opened and that if they ever open their own business that they might need to obtain a loan from the bank.

Frystown Lions Club sponsors Spotted Lanternfly informational program

In a continuing effort to make a difference in the community the Frystown Lions Club recently sponsored an information night on the Spotted Lanternfly.

The Bethel-Tulpehocken Public Library, under the supervision of Leigh Beamesderfer, hosted the event.

After Lions club president Dennis Zerbe welcomed those who came to hear about the Spotted Lanternfly, he introduced Master Gardener Karen George of Berks Cooperative Extension who presented the program.

Virtual reality brings learning to life for Schuylkill Valley students

A dinosaur jumped off the iPhone screen in 3-D, much to the amazement of dinosaur fan Logan Henne, a first grader at Schulykill Valley Elementary.

“The dinosaurs, they make it real,” said Henne. “Cool. Teeth, horns. Dinosaurs are very cool.”

Kindergarten to fourth grade students stood within the eye of a hurricane, swam with fish and witnessed a volcano erupt during a virtual reality lesson using iPhones during Google’s visit at Schuylkill Valley Elementary for their Google Expeditions Augmented Reality Pioneer Program on May 9.

Michael Sexton of Longswamp Troop 575 earns Eagle Scout rank

Brandywine Heights High School sophomore Michael R. Sexton, 15, of Longswamp Troop 575, recently received his Eagle Scout rank. For his Eagle Project, Sexton fundraised, organized, and constructed a GaGa Ball Pit for the Topton Borough Park Renovation Project.

Sexton earned 32 Merit Badges and held the positions within the troop: Troop Guide, Troop Instructor, Assistant Patrol Leaders, and Den Chief.

Hamburg Borough Police honor memory of police killed in line of duty 90 years ago

The Hamburg Police Department remembers and recognizes that 90 years ago, Chief Wilson Lewars and an assisting officer confronted armed individuals that were in the commission of a forcible felony.

Chief Lewars was shot in the chest, neck and head. He succumbed to his injuries later that day.
